Marketing doesn’t work. MMMM#2

Today we’re talking about the ‘FACT’ that marketing is all b*****ks and doesn’t work!

if I had £1 for every time I heard a small business owner say this I could begin to pay my  monthly mobile phone bill (around £30 a month!) from a standing order marked ‘Marketing B*****ks’.

This analogy is to merely demonstrate how often I hear that ‘Marketing doesn’t work’ ‘Marketing is a load of crap’ and ‘Marketing is a total waste of money’ yadi yadi ya….

All of the above is true for those of you that have approached marketing from the viewpoint that is is a way to improve sales in the short term…This is what I would term ‘Advertising’.

But real ‘Marketing’ is so much more than this….Real ‘Marketing’ should put the customer at the heart of the business…Understand their needs, wants and motivations and then align the marketing communications activity to fit.

Marketing is NOT a magic wand and will NOT solve all of the businesses sales problems, it is function and a process that aligns the business objectives (i.e making a profit) with customer requirements.

Throwing money at advertising is fine, if you’ve got the money and your not expecting much of a return. But why not try looking at marketing from a different point of view, and start laying the foundations for a sustainable profitable business with loyal customers that spread the word about how fantastic you and your company are!
